Stressed for the Test?

With finals coming up, it’s always a good idea to remember to relax! Here at Wayland, we’ve got some fun activities and helpful tips to help you shake off those pre-final jitters.

If you’re not sure how to study effectively for your finals, here are a few tried-and-true tips from fellow students:

  • Join a study group! It never hurts to ask classmates for help—especially around finals. Studying with friends makes the process less stressful and saying material out loud helps with retention.

  • Make a Quizlet! Believe it or not, creating your own digital flashcards or practice quizzes can really help when you need to review material quickly.

  • Don’t wait until the last minute! Studying sooner rather than later gives your brain more time to absorb and retain the information.

  • Schedule study appointments with your professors! Don’t be shy—your professors want you to succeed. Ask for a one-on-one session to go over tricky material. Chances are, they’ll be happy to help.

Now, here are some great ways to relax during finals week:

  • Take breaks! Pulling an all-nighter won’t help you if you’re exhausted during the test. Get enough sleep and take breaks during study sessions.

  • Go for a walk! A short walk can help lower your stress and refresh your mind for the next round of studying.

  • Spend time with friends! Socializing—even for a little while—can help you relax and reset.

  • Engage in a hobby! Do something that brings you joy between study sessions to keep your energy and mood up.

  • Try peppermint! Chewing peppermint gum, sucking on a mint, or using peppermint essential oil can help relax your brain and improve memory. It’s a simple and effective test-day tool!

  • Skip the caffeine on test day. As tempting as it may be, coffee and energy drinks can increase anxiety and make it harder to focus. Stick with water to stay hydrated and clear-headed.

  • Eat something before your exam! Even if your test is early, don’t skip breakfast. You don’t want to be distracted by hunger—and you’ll perform better with a bit of fuel in your system.

Overall, don’t stress yourself out. Celebrate the fact that the semester is nearly over, take a deep breath, and stay calm. You've made it this far—finals are just the last step. Good luck, and remember: you’ve got this!
